About the Author
Gavin MacKenzie is a partner in the Toronto office of DLA Piper (Canada) LLP. His litigation practice is focused on professional responsibility, liability and discipline, appeals, judicial review applications, and general civil and commercial litigation. He has appeared before all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada and before many tribunals. Mr. MacKenzie is often retained as an expert witness on professional responsibility and litigation in the US and Canada. He was elected as a Bencher of The Law Society of Upper Canada four times and as Treasurer from 2006 to 2008. He is a Director of the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice and has served as Chair of LibraryCo Inc., a Director of The Advocates' Society and the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from The Law Society of Upper Canada in recognition of his contributions to the profession. He was also honoured by induction as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. He is the author of Lawyers and Ethics: Professional Responsibility and Discipline, the 5th edition of which was published by Thomson Reuters (Carswell) in 2009. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Ethics at Osgoode Hall Law School.
